Implant Overdentures

An overdenture is a special type of denture with built-in locators that clip or snap onto corresponding dental implants. The prosthesis looks like a traditional denture but is fixed in place throughout the day.

Advantages of Overdentures

Overdentures offer not only a solid foundation but also other variety of advantages as compared to conventional dentures. Some of these advantages can be purely cosmetic; however, all of these can affect your quality of life, making you happier and healthier.

Why Get an Overdenture?

Overdentures merge the stability of dental implants with the economic advantage of dentures. When you need a way to better secure your removable prosthesis (as in the instance of lower full dentures) we can use a couple of added implants to provide a base to snap onto.

Eat the Foods You Love

When conventional dentures are retained in the mouth using denture adhesives, it often can be difficult to eat the hard and chewy foods you love. With implant-retained overdentures, you are able to improve your dietary health by having more nutritious foods back on the menu. It also enables you to chew your food more completely which will improve your digestion. This increases the nutrients your body is able to absorb.

Any time you lose a tooth, the bone in that immediate area begins to shrink over time. Installing an implant at that location helps to reinforce the bone, providing it with something to hold onto. When you place a dental implant soon after the tooth is removed, it minimises or eliminates the added risk of bone shrinkage.

Unlike traditional dentures, implant-retained overdentures are supported with TGA- approved titanium implants which integrate into living bone cells. This process is called osseointegration. It helps to preserve your jawbone by slowing or even stopping the bone resorption (bone shrinkage) that is common with patients with no remaining teeth.

This is a huge advantage of having implant-retained overdenture, as in contrast, the conventional denture can accelerate bone resorption due to the force on the gum while eating.

As your jawbone loss is prevented with implant osseointegration, overdenture can help to stop the deterioration of your natural facial contours. When your natural teeth have been lost, keeping the bone alive and stimulated is the only way to halt the bone shrinkage. Additionally, as overdenture is secured with implants you will not be concerned about embarrassing dislodgement.

Implant-retained overdentures increase retention of your teeth in your mouth and can reduce or eliminate movement of denture. In improving the appearance of your smile and speech and chewing function, overdentures can enhance your physical and psychological health.

Adhesives used for denture retention, while convenient for some, do not truly secure your dentures to your gum. Conventional dentures held in with adhesives can be dislodged and affect the taste and also can be very messy.

Without support from implants, satisfactory stabilisation of lower dentures can be very difficult to achieve due to surrounding anatomy such as muscle attachments and tongue. Because the retention and stability are unmatched with implant-retained overdentures, you will no longer need the hassle of using adhesives to keep your denture in place.
